It’s not easy being a princess. Really, it isn’t. Oh, sure, I know what you’re thinking. When most people hear the word “princess,” they think about a spoiled little girl sitting around in a castle being pampered by servants all day. Or perhaps they imagine a knight in shining armor swooping in to rescue the helpless princess from some evildoer in order to save the day. But being a princess is nothing like that.

Yes, okay, well maybe it’s a little bit like that. I’m not going to lie, we do have castle servants. They are a wonderful thing to have around, and sometimes I do get pampered just a bit. Everyone should have servants to pamper them on occasion. Most kids just call these servants by their other name: Mom and Dad. But there’s a lot more to being a princess than sitting around in fancy dresses, combing our hair, and looking pretty.

Children's book: Princess in castleThat’s me, princess Lily. Yes, my parents were weird enough to name me after a flower. I’m the third child of four. I have two older brothers and a younger sister, which means I’m third in line for the throne. Like most princesses, I live a pretty enchanted life.

King & little princess looking over kingdomMy father, King William, rules a little patch of land that stretches far and wide, out beyond the mountain tops over yonder and well out into the plains. This could all be mine to manage someday, which is both really exciting and really scary. Being the boss of everything may seem like all fun and games, but it’s actually a big responsibility. My mother and father do everything they can to make sure I’m up to the task.

Real princesses have to be smart.  In fact, in my time, education is hard to come by.  Very few girls go to school at all, but we princesses are some of the smartest people alive.  We have to be.  If something were to happen to our family, we princesses might find ourselves in charge of leading the kingdom. So our parents made sure that we girls were just as smart and just as capable as the boys.  If truth be told, I’m pretty sure I’m smarter than my brothers.  I came to that conclusion after I found them trying to light each other’s farts on fire.
