When you think about emotions, imagine a big, clear blue sky with scattered clouds. Our mind is like the big blue sky, and emotions are like the clouds that float through it.
Emotions change the way things look, releasing chemical clouds in the brain that make us happy, sad, angry, afraid, and so on. These chemicals, called neurotransmitters, alter the way we think and change how we feel.
Most of the time, our mind is a clear blue, with harmless puffy white clouds floating through it. They come and go without changing us all that much. Our mind stays clear and sunny.
Yet sometimes things happen that make us feel mad, sad, angry, upset or confused. Negative thoughts stack up in the mind, blocking out the light. Our head grows dark and cloudy.
A raging storm develops, filling our head with thoughts of despair. For a while that’s all we can see, and it might seems like the rain and lightening and thunder won’t ever let up. But these dark clouds, too, will eventually float on past, clearing our mind for something new.
When it rains, the clouds release their heavy burden. After that they dissipate, which is a word that means to go away or vanish. Our emotions work in much the same way. When they’re all blocked up, it can create a raging storm. But when we release our feelings and let them out in the proper ways, it helps those bad emotions dissipate, so that we can go back to feeling clear and sunny. What are some of the ways you let out your emotions?
