Let’s explore different cultures and learn about diversity.
Imagine for a moment there’s a fish living in a fish tank. His entire world consists of the space within that tank. The fake plant, the colored rocks at the bottom, the sunken toy pirate ship in the corner. All he’s ever known about the world is contained within those four walls, so its hard for him to fathom anything different. If you could talk to the fish and tell him there are places where the rocks are big and dull, or where entire forests of underwater plants grow, or where there are giant monsters with big sharp teeth trying to gobble you up, it would probably blow his mind.
We humans inhabit a much bigger world, yet in many ways, we’re a lot like that fish in the tank. We grow up in a particular culture, surrounded by our own set of ideas, customs, and ways of behaving. Because it’s all we’ve ever known, we make the mistake of assuming this way of thinking and living is the only way to be. But what if this isn’t true? What if the world as we know it is just a tiny little sliver among infinite possibilities.
By exploring other cultures and learning about diversity, we open our mind to new possibilities. It allows us to see just how many of our ideas are an illusion created by culture. Are you ready to have your mind blown?
