When firefighters venture out to fight fires, they get all dressed up in heavy gear that helps protect them from the fire. They put on thick boots and a heat-resistant uniform. They carry an oxygen tank on their back and wear a mask that makes them sound a bit like Darth Vader when they breathe. Firefighters might even carry an axe, which they use to break through walls in order to rescue people. This is what a firefighter looks like in full uniform:
If you came across a person dressed like this, they might look rather scary, especially if you were already scared to begin with. But there’s no reason to be scared: Underneath all that heavy gear is an ordinary person who really wants to help you and keep you safe. He or she cares about you so much they’re risking their own life to come and rescue you.
You probably won’t ever find yourself stuck in a fire and in need of rescuing. But if you do, and you see someone dressed like this, whatever you do, don’t run or hide. Go to them so that they can get you out and bring you to safety!
