This is a smoke alarm. It makes a loud and annoying sound if it detects smoke in a room. Do you know what your home’s smoke alarms sound like? If not, you should have your mom or dad set one off as a test so you can hear what it sounds like.

If you ever hear that sound it means one of two things: Either mom burned dinner again, or there’s a fire in the house and you need to get out as quickly as you can. Don’t worry about bringing anything with you, and don’t go looking for the fire. Just gather all people and head outside where it’s safe. Stay there until the adults have had a chance to investigate and tell you it’s okay to go back in.
